You know that spread-city is a phenomenon that happened after the industrial Revolution, but now is becoming the standard urban from worldwilde. Today also the less developped countries have a lot of big cities that increase their size day by day.

First of all technological developments have reduced the friction of geographic space. Cities are bigger because moving in the city is easier and cheaper than before! We have a lot of means of transport!

All of them connected people located in different places and, increasingly, permitted them to behave as though they were in the same place. This is the most important reason why cities can grow without limits. I can say that cities are became more attractive in terms of work, so people who lived in rural areas moved to cities in search of more possibilities..But there is also another phenomenon..

Recently, telephones and automobiles have permitted urbanites to leave the dense older sections of metropolitan areas for the more spacious and livable suburbs and exurbs.

I want to do a careful consideration about it, because in perspective to 2050.. Could cities be everywhere?

It’s a very interesting question, because the planet Earth is limited… A good percentage of us live in  cities today and as said before ,population will increase.

If nothing will change, nature will be destroyed by human’s hand and resources too.

The last question is.. Cities take advantages and disadvantages.. How can we choose the right way for our future?

I decided to write something about human population in the future. How many people will live in 2050 in urban areas? 

 By 2050, the human population will probably be larger by 2 to 4 billion people, more slowly growing (declining in the more developed regions), more urban, especially in less developed regions, and older than in the 20th century.  it’s predicted that more than 70% of the world’s population will live in cities.

For example urban land in the United States is projected to increase from 3.1% in 2000 to 8.1% in 2050 and Asia will account for over 55% of urbanisation by 2050.

 Now more than half of the worlds’ population live in cities and that is increasing at an exponential rate. It is expected that most demographic growth in the next 30 years will be urban, with a constant stream of people moving to cities.

This is the reason why i decided to create a blog talking about cities that are projected and that could be a better solution for our future!

 It is important to say that cities consume 70% of global energy and we have to start to think about new solutions if we want to create sustainable ‘living models’ that deliver a positive future for everyone. We have two different aspects: once positive that means more creativity, innovation, culture and financial markets, as well as a concentration of education and health resources and the negative aspects where we see increased transportation and congestion, pollution, disease, housing shortages and crime.

If we will grow, we will need more space and resources, so cities are the best choice.

According to data less developped countries will grow more than more developped countries, for the reason why a lot of them are changing their economic income and their productivity. India will be the firts populeted country and the second China, because china has introdused years ago the one-child policy that has strongly compromised the growing of the population.

Hi everybody! Today i want to suggest you an interesting project called IWA (International Water Association).

This Association operates in terms of sustainability and it’s programme is focused on water security, in particular how the design of cities in the future could be harmonised and re-engineered to minimise the use and increase the coverage of water in lower and middle income countries. It wants to provide the tools, knowledge, and opportunities for the water sector to address the challenges of urban water management integral with other urban services.untitled

The Future program, launched at the Stockholm Water Week in August 2009, aspires to help cities create robust responses to change pressures like climate change, population growth, urbanization, deterioration of urban infrastructure systems and more.

In my opinion this could be a great opportunity for less developped countries and an important matter of study for the most developped countries in the world!! IWA is an international leader in the water Sector and has the responsibility to help cities and research communities to work together with a common aim.  The Association operates in different parts of the world. In particular it is concentrated on Africa, where it has established in 2009 an office that wants to address Africa’s increasing water and sanitation challenges. It also operates in China, Danube and eastern Europe, Latin America and Carribean, North America, South-East Asia & Pacific and Western and Southen Europe.

Architects are communicators.

Today i want to discover with you a particular man that has created important projects in the urbanism’s sector.

Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris known as Le Corbusier, was an architect and designer urban planner that has inspired a lot of architects in the world, because it is considered the pioneer of modern architecture. His name take place from an altered form of his mother’s name and it’s interesting, because this pseudonym meaning something special: everyone can reinvent himself.

I decide to talk about this man, because his way of thinking is very original. It was just modern years ago!! I have studied Le Corbusier in a urbanism’s course at the University of Milan and i liked it!

I don’t want to talk to you how  this man was extremely important, but i want to focus my attention  on his projects with the aim to capture his way of thinking a better city.  Le Corbusier proposed the Plan Voisin for Paris.

First of all he felt that cities should grow vertically and should be complex roadways separated from pedestrian traffic to promote efficient transport between the regions.

Le Corbusier’s hypothesis is that man will built his city on the principals of geometry. We perceive the external world and express the world within us! The main word is: ORDER. The city of the future must be planned rectangulary.

The city could be made in the image of man who is made in the image of…

It is a little be different drawing something on the paper and realize it, because reality is different. In fact his project was considered as a “utopia”, like something that it is projected according to your dreams, but is really difficult to realize it.

Hi everybody!

I want to show you a different way to connect the past with the future.

If i ask you to think about an underground city, you realize that i’m talking about an ancient city. It isn’t. This way of building a city is not only an ancient way, but also our minds are projecting cities that will be able to transform humans in ants.

This is not new, because  the principal city’s half of transport is the underground, but i want to talk about this new idea, because i think it could be interesting!

If the population continue to grow, we will need to discover new ways to build our cities, and this could be a solution, in prevision of a self-sufficient underground city.

An interesting project is proposed by a russian architect, Ab Elise, that has designed a city to be constructed 550-meters deep in an abandoned Siberian mine. It will be able to house about 100,000 people, and according to the project, the city will be ready for the 2020.

It will be divided in three levels containing vertical farms, residential areas and recreational spaces. It needs a protective glass, with the aim to guard it’s residents from Siberia’s weather. Image

At the moment the project is only on paper. So, what do you thing about this type of solution? if we’ll decide to build underground, could be dangerous or not?

I think immediately on problems concerning geological aspects, like impervious’ ground or in general earthquakes. Probably there will be new solutions for our security.

Hi everybody! Today i decided to show you a city that could be very very  interesting in prevision of our future!!!

I start with a question.. What is exactly an AEROTROPOLIS?

It sounds something that remind me my favourite half of transport, the ariplane. Isn’t it?

aerotropolis5  So an aerotropolis can be defined as a city developed around airports. Now we are accustomed to known cities that are built around a port, for example Boston, or a city developped around the most used half of transport, the car, such as Los Angeles.

Why we can’t build a city around an airport?! This idea came from the author and journalist Greg Lindsay, that shows how cities have to adapt to globalization. In our everyday life we don’t think how many things and product are transported by airplane in order to satisfy our needs. Flowers, food and the list can go on. People connect the airplane with their travels, but it is not only connected with tourism. The main disadvantages? Increasing air travel is not sustainable for aircraft’s CO2 emissions. In my opinion i think that using an airport as the hub of a new city can’t work, at least in the short term. Relatively few goods are valuable enough to be shipped by air. First of all the enormous consumption of ground that it requires.

What’s your opinion according to this new city thought for our future?

Good evening! I want to tell you something about cities that could be important for the development of our future. We know that today globalisation is a phenomenon that invests everyone and is difficult to find a city self-sufficient, but i want to show you a new city that will be one of the most important cities of the future, according to the benefits of economy business and the environment..

Masdar City is an emergent city not far from Abu Dabi (about 15 km). It will be one of the most sustainable communities in the world, because it will be completely itself serves as a model of what green urban development can be. The city is designed to provide an highest quality of life, with the lowest environmental footprint. It is estimated that  a permanent laboratory of green economy will be built there and energy will be produced by the sun and the wind. There will be a lot of green spaces and the resource of water will be managed with intelligence.

 So what is your opinion about this type of city? 

I think that could be a great idea of city, because it will produce everything that needs and in the same time using renewable energy.

Hi! My name is Letizia and this is my new blog! I decide to write about cities of the future, because i think is a topic that could be object of considerations and it could be also a subject that will create different opinions  and points of view! We are 7 billion people and resources are not unlimited, so we have to project and to think about the perfect city of the future. Fantasy and imagination are two of the most important qualities that characterize urbanists. They try everyday to describe their personal view of what a city of the future must have. At the same time is also important to protect the environment and minimize consumptions.

Today I want to focus my attention on underwater cities.  

Living underwater today is possible. Technology is developed and day by day try to find new resources to allow new way of life.  Is possible to build constructions on the bottom of the ocean or sea. Since 1979 in the United States have been built 12 underwater’s environments. Today near Florida Keys’s islands, under the Atlantic Ocean, we can find three of them: the Aquarius Reef Base, the Marine Lab used for the trainings of the Marine and Nasa and the Jules Undersea Lodge.

The possibility to create underwater colonies of 100 people could be a great  experiment. If a society has the money and the need, this project can be realized. Technology would be deal with humidity, emergency evacuation systems and environmental controls.  Underwater cities have some beautiful aspects, for example the possibility to see everyday a different type of nature, like fishes and corals. New resources can be used to satisfy different needs. Cities can be built underwater  using new materials, like modules made of glass, bubbles of steel or a special cement.

 Unfortunately there are a lot of negative aspects. For example the difficulty to dispose off the refuses that  populations produce. Also the pressures are a problem: if we decide to build any deeper 300 mt. the returning on the surface will became much difficult.

The question is: underwater cities could be a good idea for our future?
